Waring CMS120 Professional 12 Cup Programmable Coffeemaker

Waring CMS120 Professional 12 Cup Programmable Coffeemaker

If you’re an avid coffee drinker, then you probably already know by now that not all coffeemakers are the same.  Some are flashily designed and have a ton of features, while other coffeemakers have a more simplistic design and are scarce on features.

But more importantly than the design or the amount of features, you want to find a coffeemaker that makes a great tasting pot of coffee over and over again. Fortunately, you can have great design, plenty of features and great tasting coffee when you get the Waring CMS120 Professional 12 Cup Programmable Coffeemaker.

Let’s take a look at what sets this handy kitchen appliance apart from some of the others like it.

Features Of The Waring CMS120 Coffeemaker

To start with, the design of the machine is simple, but attractive.  It’s standard height so it will work well on any counter.  It has a nice, slender design to it so if you have a narrow counter you want to place it on, it will fit perfectly.

The outside of the machine is made from stainless steel, so it has a soft, polished look that complements any kitchen.  The coffeemaker mixes the stainless steel design with black and carries that color over into the handle of the carafe.  By not using stainless steel on the handle, you can be assured that the carafe handle won’t be too hot for you to pick up.

Just like the Cuisinart DCC-1200, this machine is completely programmable, so you get to program the machine to have your coffee ready before you start your day.  There’s something about having coffee already prepared that makes the morning go a little smoother.  Plus, by using the programmable settings, if you know you have company coming, you can set it and have it ready and hot when your guests arrive.

Sometimes life can interrupt and you just have to take an important phone call or you have to head out to the office earlier than you planned to leave the house.  If your coffee is in the middle of brewing, the Waring CMS120 Professional 12 Cup Programmable Coffeemaker has a feature that will allow you to halt the flow of coffee into the carafe long enough for you to fill your coffee mug.

This is called the brew pause function and is a feature that also comes with the Cuisinart DCC-1200 machine.  A lot of the higher end machines will have this feature, but are still sold at an affordable price.

One feature that this machine has that’s a huge hit with users is that the filter basket isn’t built on top of the machine where it gets in the way of filling up the reservoir.  Instead, this machine has the basket built in so that it opens out like you’d open a door.

This gives you clear access to the filter basket and enables you to put the beans or grounds into the coffee pot more easily than what you find with some other machines.  The filter basket opening out is a feature that’s a better fit for some people than what’s available on the Cuisinart DCC-1200.   It just depends on what you prefer and what you’re used to.

The machine is large, but fast - so it can make 12 cups of coffee fairly swiftly, but you can also select the machine to brew less than the full 12 cups.

Filling the reservoir isn’t a problem with the large, easy to view sides and the way that the carafe is made so that water doesn’t leak out while you pour it.

The clock and the blue light on the coffeemaker are easy to read and handy to have in the kitchen.

The coffee filters themselves are a different shape than the normal round ones that fit most baskets. Instead, these have a cone shape, which many users like better.

The Waring CMS120 Professional 12 Cup Programmable Coffeemaker has an automatic shut off just like the Cuisinart DCC-1200, so you won’t find a difference in features there.

The Waring is comparable to the Cuisinart and has the added benefit of the filter basket that's easier to use.

Safety Of The Waring CMS120 Coffeemaker

This coffeemaker automatically shuts off two hours after it completes its brewing cycle.  Some people like this feature and some prefer the way the Cuisinart allows you to pick and choose the time for shut-off yourself.

Cleaning

It doesn’t seem to have any specific self-cleaning features, but like the other brands, you could run a mixture of vinegar and water through the system and then flush it out with a pure water brew.

Cons Of The Waring CMS120 Coffeemaker

Because the filters are different (being the cone shaped), they are harder to find at the store.  You’ll either have to search long and hard for these, order them online in advance, or do without.  If you do without, you’ll end up with coffee grounds in your coffee so the filters are a must have.

The automatic shut off time is set in stone.  You can’t change it for whatever shut off time is convenient for you, unlike the Cuisinart DCC-1200, which does allow you to change shut off time.

The machine has alert beeps that let you know when the coffee is done.  While this can be handy for people, some consumers say the signals are loud enough to disturb sleep, and since they’re preprogrammed into the machine,  you don’t have a way to change the loudness of the signals.
